Pinnacles National Monument is located in California,
about 2 hours drive south of San Francisco. The beautiful rock formations
seemingly spring up from an otherwise serene landscape of the Gabilan
Mountains. The rock formations of Pinnacles National Monument were created
long ago by a volcano that has since moved
south along the San Andreas fault.
There are two entrances to the park, entering
from the opposite sides east and west, but theses entrances are not connected
by roadway through the park. Within the park itself, there are an estimated 30 miles
of trail that pass by huge stone monoliths and spires, some along sheer cliff.
It's a very scenic location and deserves a weekend of exploration.

Some hiking destinations are ideal for a relaxing stop for
lunch or a drink or just to enjoy the view.

At first glance it might be difficult to
appreciate the scale of things in this photo. But these rock formations stand
many times as tall as the surrounding trees.
|
Some of the trails here traverse sheer rock faces
amidst towering stones.

When I visited in late March, wildflowers were blooming
throughout Pinnacles National Monument, adding another element of beauty to
this already beautiful landscape.
